WHO: More than 31,000 citizen of Zimbabwe to have cholera

GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) notes, currently more than 30,000 citizens of Zimbabwe positively infected with cholera. This number to increase speculation there are more citizens Zimbawe to be killed. WHO data released yesterday and Thursday quoted AFP, Friday (2/1/2009) as a positive 31,656 people have cholera bacteria. As many as a third of them located in the Zimbabwe capital Harare.

This number is 2,000 more than the WHO data released Monday this week, which recorded as many as 29,131 people. Meanwhile, the victim died has reached nearly 1,600 people.

Not only in Zimbabwe, cholera outbreaks have been reported to infect neighboring countries, namely South Africa (Afsel). So far 13 residents have died of Afsel. A total of nine victims killed lived in the Limpopo area that borders directly with Zimbabwe. In addition, the WHO noted, has 1,334 residents Afsel to have a positive cholera.

UN predict cholera outbreaks in Zimbabwe will reach 60,000 cases. This is in line with the rainy season which will accelerate the spread of bacteria.
